The Pipestone Economic Development Authority (EDA) will hold an open house at the former Good Shepherd Evangelical Lutheran Church in Pipestone on Thursday, Oct. 30 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The EDA purchased the property for $62,500 earlier this year and plans to make it available for use as a childcare facility.

The EDA’s plan is to remodel the building to make it a single-family residence and lease it to someone who will operate it as a family childcare facility. No one will live there, but as a single-family residence, it can be used for that purpose. Community Development Director Justin Schroyer said during the EDA’s Oct. 20 meeting that he had heard from at least one individual interested in leasing the space.

During that meeting, the EDA approved expenses related to the remodeling project. That included an estimate of $6,150 from Darl’s Lawn Care to install a fence in the yard; a $3,975 estimate from Petersen Property Company, LLC to install an egress window, add exterior stairs and repair the chimney; and a $2,360.18 estimate from JD Rieck Plumbing to install a shower.

Schroyer said items had been removed from the building and interior painting had begun. The $107,300 budget for the project also includes new flooring and playground equipment. EDA members discussed waiting for input from the future daycare provider who will lease the space to make a decision about playground equipment.

According to the budget for the project, the EDA plans to contribute $70,200 toward the budgeted expenses. Schroyer said he had applied for a grant from the Taylor Family Farms Foundation for the remaining $37,100.

“If we get that, then we can do all this stuff,” he said. “We won’t know for a couple of months.”
