PAS solar array activated

The new solar array at Pipestone Area Schools (PAS) went into service in December, meeting Sioux Valley Energy’s (SVE) goal of having it activated before the end of the year.

SVE representatives presented a proposal for the 20 kilowatt (kW) solar array to the PAS School Board in the spring of 2024 and the school board approved documents related to the array in the summer. The solar array is located north of the elementary school near where the wind turbine previously sat. SVE representatives told the school board there was an interconnection agreement related to the turbine and L&O Power Cooperative wanted to carry that on with the solar array.

The array has a total estimated lifetime cost of $260,000, which was provided by a grant from L&O Power Cooperative.
“This amount covers all aspects of the project, including the installation, commissioning and ongoing maintenance over the system’s life,” said SVE Manager of Beneficial Electrification Nathan Zimmerman. “The estimate also includes the cost for decommissioning the system at the end of its 20-year term, ensuring that PAS will not incur any expenses related to the removal of the array or site restoration once the project reaches the end of its lifespan. This comprehensive coverage reflects a commitment to ensuring the system is fully operational, well-maintained and appropriately decommissioned at the end of its term.”

PAS will receive a reimbursement of $.037 per kilowatt hour produced by the solar array with an expected average reimbursement of around $100 per month. SVE and PAS also plan to use the solar array to provide educational opportunities to students.

“While no specifics have been determined, we are excited about the potential for hands-on learning and curriculum integration,” Zimmerman said.
