Former Pipestone resident, Randy Mortensen, passed away unexpectedly in Palm Bay, Fla. on Aug. 29, 2025, from complications following emergency surgery for a rare intestinal disorder. He was a 1971 graduate of Pipestone High School.
Randy was born in LeMars, Iowa—the ice cream capital of the nation as he would always say—to Joanne who survived him and Wayne Mortensen who preceded him in heaven. Randy is also survived by his brother Dan and sister Connie and their families. Randy is remembered with love by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and business acquaintances who mourn his passing.
Randy was married nearly 36 years to his loving wife Pat with whom he partnered in business, ministry, travel and life.
He was the proud father of two sons: Jay, with whom he is now joyfully reunited in eternity, and Joel, who is married to Sandy. His grandson, Oliver, was the light of his life and brought him endless joy.
Throughout his 72 years, Randy lived with an unstoppable entrepreneurial spirit, always pursuing new ideas and ventures. Yet, his greatest legacy was not found in business, but in the lives he touched. Out of a deep compassion for those struggling with addiction, he co-founded Quest 180—a ministry dedicated to helping individuals and families find freedom and healing through God’s grace. He recently released his book “God Took Me to Las Vegas…to Get Sober.”
In 2006, Randy’s heart was forever changed when he first traveled to Haiti. From that moment on, he and his wife Pat committed their lives to serving the people there through World Wide Village. For nearly two decades, their efforts brought education, medical care, safe housing, clean water, and opportunities for sustainable livelihoods to thousands of families.
Randy was a force of nature—driven, passionate, and generous. His absence leaves a profound void, yet his impact lives on in the countless lives he impacted. We take comfort in knowing that he now walks with his Savior Jesus, awaiting the day we are all reunited with him there.
A celebration of Randy’s life was held in the Church at Viera in Melbourne, Fla. on Sept. 26, 2025. The family requests that any memorial gifts be directed to World Wide Village, Inc., worldwidevillage.org, to continue the work in Haiti that Randy so faithfully began.
