RODEO NOTEBOOK: DeRuyter takes third in trail

Kruse takes Dutch Festival title

GUTHRIE, Okla. — Ruthton area resident Sadie DeRuyter placed well at the National Little Britches Rodeo Association meet.

DeRuyter placed fourth in the short go on July 5 at Lazy E Arena, recording a time of 24.939.

The trail course is not as easy as it sounds, and there was a new pattern for the short go.

Contestants first had to traverse a bridge, followed by retrieving a piece of mail from box, backing through two barrels and working a gate.

There is a short video of the performance on the Pipestone County Star’s Facebook page.

DeRuyter scored 943 world points for third place out of 110 entrants. She also was third on average with a three-ride time of 69.106 seconds.

She clocked in with a time of 22.205 in the first go — followed by 21.962 in the second.

In addition to trail riding, DeRuyter also participated in pole bending, barrel racing, ribbon roping and breakaway roping.

In ribbon roping, DeRuyter teamed up with Lila Luedeman of Hanover, Minn.

The pair placed 24th on average out of 77 teams and scored 357 points.

DeRuyter scored 374 points in barrel racing, which was 37th out of 234 entrants.

Overall, DeRuyter won four buckles, an undisclosed amount of prize money and placed 16th overall with 583 points. There were 384 entrants, so a placement this high is quite an achievement.
