For those who love a summer festival, Pipestone County has several to offer. The next one up on the schedule is Ruthton’s annual Fourth of July celebration.
The annual holiday celebration will begin Friday morning, July 4 with the parade at 11 a.m. Line up begins at 10 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church and Brenda Dagel, a member of the Buffalo Ridge Civic Organization (BRCO), which organizes the annual celebration, said anyone who wants to participate in the parade can show up at that time and place. The parade will travel down Smith Avenue, turn onto Aetna Street and end at the Country Church.
After the parade, there will be a lunch at the Ruthton City Park for a freewill donation to help pay for the activities. The lunch will include hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, cookies, water and watermelon.
After lunch there will be bingo in the park. Other events include a car show downtown from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., a petting zoo from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., music by Prairie Girl Melodies from noon to 2 p.m., Mr. Twister from noon to 2 p.m., and an inflatable from noon to 2 p.m. Dagel said there have been inflatables in the past, but that it’s been a while.
At 12:30 p.m., there will be a sand money pit for kids. Also at 12:30 p.m. is the registration for the kids pedal pull, which starts at 1 p.m. At 1:30 p.m., there will be a bean bag tournament to raise funds for the Ruthton Fire Department.
Some of the food trucks that will be available during the celebration, include Lingen Dairy, which will provide ice cream, and the Skelly’s Meats Meat Wagon, which will provide meat snacks.
Dagel said the goal of the celebration is to provide a family fun event for the community.
“We usually get a big crowd, starting with the parade,” she said. “There’s lots going on for the afternoon, especially for the kiddos.”
Dagel said the BRCO is a small group, so they always welcome volunteers to help plan the celebration and help on the day of the event. Anyone interested can contact her or show up the day of the event and let the organizers know they’d like to help.
