The Heritage Preservation Commission (HPC) during a special Oct. 2 meeting approved a special building permit allowing a new sign to be placed on the Pipestone Tobacco building at 118 West Main Street in Pipestone. HPC approval was required because the property is located in the city’s historic district.

According to information presented at the meeting, the sign will be 16 feet long and 22 inches high and fill the space of the a previous sign on the front of the building. It will be made of an aluminum composite material that will be laminated with white letters that say Tobacco – Cigar – Pipe – Vape on a black background. Community Development Director Justin Schroyer said the material will be similar to the signs on Wellness Square.

HPC members asked the owner of the business, Ibraheem Sulaiman, if the All About Smiles sign that protrudes from the front of the building will be removed and he said it would. The property was previously occupied by All About Smiles until that business moved to its new location at 619 Sixth Ave. SW. Pipestone Tobacco opened at the site in July.
