SPECIAL EVENT: Plenty of sports on tap at Dutch Festival

Mini-bulls run tonight — along with mutton bustin'

EDGERTON — There will be plenty of sports-themed options during the forthcoming 75th Annual Dutch Festival.

The theme is “Diamonds: Through the Decades.”

Here’s a list of sporting events taking place during the festival, which runs from Thursday-Saturday, July 10-12.

Thursday

Mini bulls and Mutton bustin’

Great Frontier Bull Riding — based in Maynard — will present a mini-bulls rodeo beginning at 7 p.m. July 10, with three divisions of competition, in City Park.

The divisions are: pee wees (ages 6-8), juniors (9-11) and seniors (12-14).

The entry fee is $50. Registration spots are limited, with 24-hour advanced notice required for all draw outs. 

A cash prize and buckle will be awarded in each division.

The books for the event opened Monday, June 30.

These are full-grown adult bulls, but miniature in size.

Tickets are $10 at the gate, with no pre-sale. Children five years old and younger are admitted free.

There also will be mutton bustin’.

Students from first through fifth grade weighing 75 pounds or less are eligible to ride, and must have a ticket. Buying a ticket means a chance to ride.

Mutton bustin’ tickets are one for $5 and three for $10, with proceeds benefiting FFA.

The top-10 mutton busters will advance to Friday night’s bull riding event, with the top three earning trophies.

Friday

Premium bull riding

Great Frontier Bull Riding will be running its main rodeo from 8-10 p.m. Friday, July 11 in City Park.

The event will have $6,000 added, and books opened and closed on Monday, June 30.

This is a National Federation of Professional Bullriders-sanctioned event.

The event winner will receive a buckle.

Saturday

Dutch Fun Run

The Dutch Fun Run begins at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 12.

Check-in begins at 7 a.m.

There will be three formats: a five-kilometer run, a 10-kilometer run and five-kilometer walk.

The start and finish line are located by Roger’s Auto Sales (220 East Howard Street).

The entry fee is $10 per person, except walkers will not be charged.

Fishing

The Craig Fey Memorial fishing contest will take place from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, July 12.

Live bait has been donated by Roger’s Auto Sales and Second Nature Taxidermy.

There also will be turtle racing following the fishing tournament.

3-on-3 Basketball

There will be a 3-on-3 basketball tournament beginning at 10 a.m. in City Park.

Registration starts at 8:30 a.m.

The entry fee is $50 per team.

Players must be at least 16 years of age to participate.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the teams finishing first and second overall.

Bean Bag Tournament

A bean bag (cornhole) tournament will take place at 1 p.m. in City Park.

There’s $750 in added money to the event, with two divisions.

The entry fee for the competitive bracket is $40 per team, and $20 per team in the backyard bracket.

Registration begins at noon. No advance sign-up is neccessary.

Food trucks and beverage vendors will be present.

Cruise-In and Tractor Show

The 21st Annual Cruise-In and Tractor Show will be from 1-4 p.m. during the Dutch Festival.

The show location is the intersection of Mill Street and 4th Avenue.

Bring any type of vehicle (cars, trucks, semis, motorcycles and tractors).

A “push the limits” contest will take place. People may guess how long a classic vehicle will run without water and just one quart of oil.

There will be two committee’s choice awards presented, one for top vehicle and another for top tractor.

There will be musical entertainment.

The ATV Big Air Tour follows at 4:30 p.m.
