TO THE EDITOR:
I came across a post on Facebook that a parent had made expressing their frustration that the local school was taking a field trip to a bowling alley in Brookings, S.D. I couldn’t believe what I was reading.
How are we preaching to support small businesses and shop local when our own school is promoting and teaching kids to go elsewhere for what we have here? It would be different if they were simply attending a circus, sporting event, movie, or theater performance that wasn’t performing in town…but to take the children to a bowling alley?
We have one of those, one that is a wonderful example for children of a young lady taking initiative and bettering the community. A local business that donates to several local organizations, events, and even school programs gets ignored for a large city bowling alley that won’t even remember our school’s name the next day.
The owner of Bole-Mor Lanes added a very heartfelt comment to the Facebook post I saw about how upsetting it was to her as well, explaining that locals choosing to go to large city bowling alleys constantly are the reason for so many small town bowling alleys to be closing down. I’m appalled, and quite frankly aggravated, to learn of this field trip.
I’m sure it cost the school quite a bit more money than staying local would have as well. Do better, Pipestone Area Schools.
