TRACK AND FIELD: Arrow girls shine, take 3rd

Darveaux sets school pole vault record, Winsel dominates

The Pipestone Area Schools’ girls track and field team had its strongest performance of the season during the Robert “Bob” Nangle Relays.

The Arrows recorded a third-place finish with 72 points as Aurora Winsel and Taylor Post had gold-medal efforts in the sprints.

What’s more, PAS scored points in three out of four relays and Cassidy Carson and Davina Darveaux came through in the field events.

Twice last week, Darveaux established new school record benchmarks in the pole vault.

She sprang to 7-feet, 9-inches at the Nangle Relays, and bested that by three inches (8-0) two days later at the Lakeview Laker Invitational in Cottonwood.

“It’s just her strength,” Tinklenberg said of Darveaux’s week. “She’s put the time in the weight room, and gymnastics also helped her get stronger. She’s been working at it.”

Carson marked at 32-0 in the shot put for fourth place, and she was fifth in the shot put (83-5).

Winsel, who has become one of the area’s smoothest runners, dominated the sprints with fantastic times of 13.71 in the 100-meter dash and 27.89 in the 200 dash. Post clocked in at 1:04.88 for first in the 400.

Seventh-grader Aubrey Brockberg ran the opening leg of the Arrows’ 4×400 relay that finished second (4:28.44), joining second leg Winsel, third leg Naomi Wallace and anchor Taylor Post.

Amelia Bucher ran the opening leg while Brockberg was second, Shayden Jolitz third and Alivia Freuchte anchor as the Arrows placed fourth in the 4×800-meter relay (11:44.73).

Wallace added a bronze-medal finish in the high jump, marking at 4-8.

On the boys side, Kristofer Eischens earned a bronze in the pole vault with a mark of 8-6.

PAS had four fourth-place performances, including Americ Suvandy’s 12.11 effort in the 100 dash and Logan Cordell popping a mark of 127-6 in the discus.

Suddenly, discus success has clicked for Cordell, who’s now throwing 30 feet farther than from the season’s inception.

The Arrows 4×100 and 4×200 relay foursomes of Suvandy, second leg Trevin DeWilde, third leg Bentley Pater and anchor Cayden Zephier provided respective times of 47.21 and 1:38.73 for fourth.

“Americ and the relays are cutting times and making some progress,” Tinklenberg explained. “We hope to be competitive by sub-sections.”

The boys scored 34 points for eighth place.

Area performances

Among area performers, Southwest Minnesota Christian/Edgerton’s Silas Van Essen won the 300-meter intermediate hurdles at 44.02.

The Eagle 4×400-meter boys took gold as Van Essen, Ryan Pap, Jonah Uilk and anchor Aidan Schaap clocked in at the outstanding time of 3:34.74.

Busker and Schaap earned top honors in the high jump (6-2) and triple jump (41-8), respectively.

As for the Eagle girls, throwing specialist Jocelyn Barron swept the shot put (34-2) and discus (93-0) while the 4×100 relay contingent of Alyvia Brands, Makenzie Pap, Mara Prins and Avery Fey took gold in a time of 53.72.

Russell-Tyler-Ruthton’s Logan Roelofs continues to be the class of distance races with wins in both the 1,600 (4:49.09) and 3,200 (10:21.65).

Teammate Luke Schreurs had a stellar all-around day with a win in the long jump (19-1 1/2) and silver medals in the 200 dash (24.66) and triple jump (39-5).

The Knights’ Ava Guida was tops in the girls’ triple jump, marking at 29-9 1/4 while Autumn Labrune was second in the 3,200 (14:33.57) and Taya Christensen second in the long jump (13-11 3/4) — rounding out the best results from the region.

Worthington was the boys champion compiling 125.5 points while Luverne was second (122.5) and SWC/Edgerton third (120.5) in a competitive tussle until completion of the 4×400 relay.

Luverne dominated on the girls side with 171 points, 88 points better than SWC/Edgerton with its 83.
