She sprinted to glory.
That’s what Pipestone Area Schools’ Aurora Winsel accomplished last Saturday during the Big South Conference small schools track and field meet at Paulsen Athletic Complex.
Winsel claimed gold in the 100-meter dash as well as the 200 dash and the open 400. She clocked in with a time of 12.91 in the 100, 25.82 in the 200 and 1:01.24 (400).
“Aurora is simply a lot stronger compared to her prior years,” PAS head coach Mark Moeller said. “Her durability gives her the ability to bounce back faster between those races.”
Winsel established a new league record in the 200, besting the previous mark established by St. James’ Amelia Collier in 2016 (26.53). And she ended up a three-time conference champion in a single day.

On the boys’ side, Cayden Zephier attacked his event with plenty of gusto. The 400 specialist earned a gold medal with a time of 52.30.
Zephier also helped pilot the Arrows to a third-place finish in the 4×400 relay.
Joined by Americ Suvandy, Carloseriel Perez-Garcia and Bentley Pater, the foursome recorded a time of 3:52.54.
Pater also earned all-conference accolades by grabbing third in the discus, marking at 119-feet, 11-inches.

Moeller also was pleased with Pater’s performance in the long jump, competing in the event for the very first time. Bentley took fourth (18-5.5).
“Without him, it would be really hard to keep our relays together and in the mix,” the coach commented. “He’s a hard worker, and a great kid (on the team).”
Haylie Tripp also earned all-conference honors by popping a mark of 4-6 in the high jump, equalling her season’s best from the Marshall Invitational in mid-April.

“Haylie’s high jump keeps getting better and better,” Moeller explained. “It’s hard coming off a season of injuries and not being able to compete. She’s made the most of competing in this event, and I’m very proud of her.”
To earn all-Big South honors, competitors needed to finish among the top three in all events. The Arrows had other near misses.
Aubrey Brockberg continues to show improvement, earning fifth place in the 300 hurdles (54.71). Suvandy earned fourth overall in the 100 dash (11.72), and he was fifth in the 200 dash (23.38).
Other conference teams also shattered previous records. Look for an updated story with those accomplishments online at: www.pipestonestar.com.
