HIGH SCHOOL TRACK AND FIELD: Winsel, Zephier sprint to state

Five Southwest Minnesota Christian/Edgerton athletes advance

REDWOOD FALLS — The Pipestone Area Schools track and field program has excelled in the 400-meter run during the 2025 season.

And both Aurora Winsel and Cayden Zephier have qualified for the Minnesota State High School League Class A state meet in that event.

The MSHSL state meet is set for St. Michael-Albertville High from Tuesday-Thursday, June 10-12. Class A preliminaries will take place at 3:30 p.m. June 10, with finals starting at 3:30 p.m. June 11.

Winsel raised her arms high after crossing the finish line first in the 400 — clocking in at 1 minute, 0.57 seconds at the Section 3A meet Thursday, May 29, at the Stephen P. Inglis Athletic Complex.

“When I crossed the finish line, I felt so relieved,” Winsel said, who said she wasn’t feeling well leading up to the meet. “I was able to push through. I just felt a wave of relief. Prayers had been answered.”

Winsel also earned a second-place finish in the 200 dash (26.34). Competition was fierce, thanks to likes of Alyvia Brands from Southwest Minnesota Christian/Edgerton and Brynn Bakken of Hills-Beaver Creek.

This marked the first year since Winsel was in eighth grade she ran a 400. Two reasons Winsel highlighted for her good fortune in the 400: better endurance and recovering ability, she said.

Despite not making the top-spots in the 400, Zephier qualified for state based on meeting a certain standard time. Cayden placed third in 51.35, behind Anikan Larson of Murray County Central and Micah Asake from Central Minnesota Christian.

“Hard work, dedication and setting goals paid off in the long run,” Zephier said. “I knew that I was going to have really good competition. My leg wasn’t feeling 100 percent; but, I just had to try and do what I’ve done all year and I would be okay.”

Zephier has now qualified for the state meet in back-to-back years.

Uilk and Van Essen joined forces with Ryan Pap and Tyler for second place in the 4×400 relay, clocking in at 3:27.72. This marks the second straight year SWC-E has qualified for state in this event.

Sprinter Alyvia Brands punched her ticket with a second-place finish in the 100 dash (12.68).

Russell-Tyler-Ruthton’s Luke Schreurs was oh-so close in both the long jump and triple jump, but he missed the standard by mere inches. Schreurs posted marks of 20-feet, 2.25-inches in the long jump and 41-10.5 in the triple jump.
