The Pipestone County Board of Appeals during its July 16 meeting approved a variance allowing Andrew Berg to build a pole barn at his property in the southeast quarter of Section 32 of Gray Township that would be less than the required 100 feet from the centerline of 61st Street.

Berg said he planned to build a 60-foot by 90-foot shed for sheep that would be about 80 feet from the center of the road. He said the reason it would only be 80 feet from the center of the road is because there’s a low spot to the north. Andrew’s wife, Kiah Berg, said they plan to remove an existing barn near the site where they plan to build the new one.

“We’ll take down that existing one that’s in the southeast quarter,” Kiah said. “That one today runs downhill, so that’s why we’re looking to run east-west there to try to stay up on that high ground to prevent excessive flooding in our barn.”

Pipestone County Planning and Zoning Administrator said he had not received any comments about the Bergs’ plans and the Board of Appeals approved the variance with little discussion.

Andrew said he hoped to have the building ready for use this fall.
