Bashir finds Water Tower Festival Medallion
This year’s Water Tower Festival Medallion was found by Shahinaz Bashir, 7, who was hunting with her sister, Saniya Bashir, 10, and their mom Melanie Johnson. The Jasper residents found the medallion on Thursday, June 26, the fifth day of the hunt, by a fire hydrant at the corner of Third Street and Third Avenue Southeast, near Meinders Community Library.
“It was a team effort and we wouldn’t have done this without our mom,” Saniya said. “She was the one who thought of going to the library, drove us there.”
The girls said they hunted for the medallion for the first time last year and had been hunting almost every day this year since the first clue was released on the Pipestone Area Chamber of Commerce’s website on Sunday, June 22. They had hunted at Moore Park, the Pipestone County Fairgrounds and the trail at Westview Park before the fifth clue led them to the library. They said the clues that led them to the correct location were the words “tale” from the third clue, “the name behind the frame” from the fourth clue and “Swapped to a quartet of establishments” in the fifth clue.
Johnson said they’d arrived at the library at around 6 p.m. and found the Medallion around 7 p.m. There were other people hunting around the library at the time, but Johnson said no one was looking anywhere past the sidewalk. Saniya suggested they look in the rocks around the fire hydrant and Shahinaz looked under the hydrant and found the medallion. The girls said they were excited to find the medallion and that their mom thought they were pranking her at first, but was even more excited than them when they showed it to her.
For finding the medallion, the girls received $100 in Pipestone Area Chamber Checks and got to keep the medallion. Shahinaz said they planned to share their winnings. Johnson said they had already shared with their brothers, Zayd, 14, and Zahir, 16, who weren’t with them when they found the medallion, by buying them ice cream. They didn’t have any other specific plans for the rest of their earnings.
