Our area finally got a reprieve from our hot, dry days these past weeks. After weeks of 90s plus, the temps dropped rather quickly over the weekend bringing much more comfortable days. Rain was not heavy, but welcome.
My week consisted of an afternoon spent at Lake Shetek, invited by Dean and Lois (Kellen) Werner to their lake home on Thursday. Invitations also went out to Lois’ aunts, Rosie Kellen’s sisters, Celine Klein, Toddy Voss and Henrietta Bullerman, Adrian, and Rita Scheffler, Worthington and her daughter, Nancy, from Lake Park, Iowa. Mary Jo Kellen made the trip from Rochester to join us, as did Diane Draper from Marshall.
The table was laid with a generous amount of delicious food, followed by a leisure trip around the lake with Dean at the helm of the pontoon. It was a most pleasant and enjoyable afternoon.
My grandson, Jim Hilpipre, Morristown, is back in the Russell area doing some work at the school and chose to spend Thursday night with me. I’m always happy to accommodate him.
One more item concerning my family, my great-granddaughter Megan, showed rabbits and a llama at the Carver County Fair in Waconia last week. She received two blue ribbons on her rabbits and champion showmanship award. Congratulations, Megan! She didn’t place in the llama competition, but gained a lot of information.
“It’s a small world” concept came into play at the fair when unbeknownst to either one, Russ and Lon Legler and Mavis and Ray Pierson, both present to watch their grandchildren show their animals met at the judging arena.
Geonna Arens continues to make the most of her summer vacation. On a hot Thursday afternoon she and her friend, Destiny Dagel, decided to set up a lemonade stand on main street in Woodstock. Many stopped for the cool drink, some left donations. At the end of the day, they had $20. I’d say a good day!
The friends divided their money equally with Geonna proudly investing hers in her savings account.
Gloria Powers attended her second reunion in two weeks in Perham. This was on her mother’s side. The Aug. 4 gathering brought 120 relatives from Texas, Oregon, the Dakotas and Minnesota.
While in Perham, Gloria attended a classmate luncheon with 12 friends. It is always a time for visiting and catching up on each other’s lives. Gloria left on Friday and returned home Tuesday.
Hope the Harvest Mass held at the Lingen dairy farm near Hatfield was well attended on Wednesday. The event was sponsored by the Tri-Parish, St. Martin, Woodstock, St. Leo, Pipestone and St. Joseph, Jasper, all part of the Winona Diocese.
QUOTE Today I will strive to have enthusiasm for life. I will meet my responsibilities head on with vitality. I will not allow situations I cannot control to bring me down.
