Malva DeVine


Malva DeVine, 98, Pipestone, died Sunday, July 12, 2020 at the Good Samaritan Communities of Pipestone.

Visitation was held Saturday, July 18 at Christ the King Free Lutheran Church in Pipestone.

Private graveside services were held at New Woodlawn Cemetery in Pipestone with Rev. Timothy Johnson officiating.

Honorary casket bearers were Cindy Johnson, Janice Swanson, Marion and Paul Everett, Marianne Drengson, Nancy O’Neill, Jan Burkholder, Helen Jensen and Duane and Jan Stratton.

Casket bearers were Paul Pierret, Terry Vogt, Tracy Pierret, Jamey Steenhoven, Mike Dahl, Troy Pierret and Jeff Steenhoven.

Malva Ann (Dorman) DeVine was born on July 13, 1921 at home on a farm east of Goodwin, S.D. to George and Anna Dorman. She was baptized June 16, 1935 at Saint Peters Evangelical Lutheran Church in Goodwin. She later became a Sunday school teacher and superintendent in Goodwin. She graduated from high school in May 1939 at Goodwin Public School.

She married James B. DeVine on Oct. 26, 1940 at St. Peters Evangelical Church in Goodwin. They lived in Grover, S.D. for their first year of marriage where she was a member of Grover Emmanuel Lutheran Church.

They made their home there until they moved to Pipestone in October of 1959. After moving to Pipestone she worked at Culligan Soft Water Service, Madson Drug, Fashion Tree, Pipestone Federal, Pipestone County Hospital and bookkeeper for DeVine Oil Company. She was a member of First Lutheran Church where she served on the Trustee Board and as treasurer for six and a half years. In February of 1984 she became a member of Christ the King Free Lutheran Church where she was treasurer until February of 2010. She was active in her Circle, Aglow, Bible Studies, Women’s Christian Club and served on various city election boards for many years.

Malva transitioned to the Good Samaritan Communities of Pipestone in August of 2016. She died July 12 at 8:40 p.m., three hours and 20 minutes short of her 99th birthday.

She is survived by her daughters, Marjorie (Paul) Pierret and Sharon (Leroy) Gravley; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Anna; her husband, James; sisters, Mamie and Alice; brothers, Arnold, Lynn, Wilbur (Jack) and Murell (Bud) and a great-grandson, Dylan Reed Pederson.
