Regina (Jeane) Appel


Regina (Jeane) Appel, 83, Ankeny, Iowa died Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2022 at her home.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 26 at St. Genevieve Catholic Church in Lake Benton.

Interment was at St. Martin Catholic Cemetery in Woodstock.

Jeane was born on August 19, 1939 in Wilmont to Lawrence and Monica Ohlenkamp. She spent her early years growing up in Wilmont until moving to Woodstock to begin the first grade at the District 14 Country School. She remained a student at the country school until enrolling in Pipestone High School. She graduated high school in 1957, and was awarded the peace pipe for her achievements as valedictorian. She continued her education at Nettleton College in Sioux Falls, S.D. for a business degree.

She met and later married Donald (Slim) J. Kor in Woodstock on May 23, 1959. The couple made their home in Holland where they raised their three kids, Leighton (1962), Lance (1964) and Jodi (1966). Jeane’s husband, Slim, died after a tragic accident on Oct. 25, 1967.

She met Jim Appel and they were married on Nov. 1, 1969. Together, they relocated to a farm near Lake Benton where they welcomed two children, Jason (1970) and Paulette (1976).

She was a member of St. Genevieve’s Catholic Church in Lake Benton. She held multiple positions within the church including the Council of Catholic Women’s (CCW) president and later on becoming the CCW president for the dioceses of New Ulm.

When her children were older she worked at Farm Service Agency (FSA) in Ivanhoe where she worked for 18 years until retirement.

In 2012, Jeane moved to Ankeny where two of her children resided. In Ankeny she was a member of Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart Catholic Church and was part of the Catholic Daughters of America.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Beth Kor; children, Lance Kor (JoeNell), Jodi Lambrecht, Jason Appel, Paulette Appel (Dawn); six grandchildren and many relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Monica Ohlenkamp and son, Leighton Kor.
